Red face engine shutdown and check gages light is on...

Hi everybody !

I have SOMETIMES a problem with my 2002 Dodge Durango SLT 4.7L. While I start engine, let's wait all the lights on dashboard switch off, I press the brake pedal and change gear to 'D'... First of all, I must put a lot of gaz to have the car moving (while usually, when I remove my feet from brake pedals, the car go moving alone)...

And then, when I switch from gear 'D' to 'R', the engine shut down... Then, I turn key to off, put gear on 'P' and try to start again the engine, but nothing... like if there is no fuel and the dashboard flash "CHECK GAGES".... I incist starting while putting a little gaz and suddently, the engine start but with very low RPM and while pressing gaz pedal, the rpm hardly goes higher RPM and then, problem is fixed...

This happened to me after a long moment without use this car (I drive a sport car for everyday and the Dodge when roads are limit/impossible because of weather) but it also happened to me while the car had done a long trip the morning and I turn on the car in the end of afternoon...

Anyone knows what it can be ?

The car is followed by garage.. oil and filter are changed once per year, battery is charged and new but I still have sometimes this problem...
I have less the problem since I put Autolite Iridium Spark Plugs.....

Thanks if anyone can help me because I'm living in Switzerland and here most of garages don't know that kind of car !...

Thanks

Fred

When it says "check gauges" what do the gauges read? Has it been over heated ever? Is there no gas in the tank? Is the voltage too low? It could be any number of things. First you could try taking the battery terminals off and cleaning them. Take out the "Idle Air Controller(IAC)" from the throttle body and clean it. Clean the port that it slides into as well. Use intake cleaner to do this. Don't push on the rod on the IAC as this will damage it.

Hello,

Thanks for your answer !

Battery is fully charged (i put sometimes a charger to keep the battery fully charged) and I changed it 1 year ago for a very good brand one..

Secondly, it happens with fuel tank full / half full / almost empty, ... it doesn't matter...

When the problem happen, I don't look too much at the oil gauge (I will now) but engine is usually cold, battery and starter are working well, and fuel tank have still fuel (last time it happened, fuel tank was full)...

When I try to incist in start the engine, I turn key to 'ON', and wait the fuel pump stop before turn key to 'START'... but still the same... very hard to get some rpm and when it comes, I need to put a lot of gaz to reach high rmp and then, problem disapear...

The problem never happen once I drive... only when car stopped a moment...

I don't think the engine over heated but in summer 2012, I had problem with the brakes... and then, I changed everything because it was breaking while I was driving on highway...But engine was cold that moment... And I already had the engine shutdown problem before the brakes over heated...

What is strange, it's because it happens only few times per year ! but always when I have appointments

Thanks for your help, I will try to clean the IAC and clean the contacts too... but don't you think I would get an error code in the OBD if it was that ?

Thanks and regards !

Fred

The IAC and cleanliness of the battery terminals are some of the few things that WONT leave a code in the old system. Give that a try as my best bet is the IAC is either dirty, or malfunctioning.

Thumbs up feedback !

Hi dear friend !

Sorry for delay, I was very busy at work....

Well, let me give you a feedback of the operation of friday November 1st on my Durango...

I must confess you that it was dirty inside de IAC and I expect the problem was it heheheheheh

I cross my fingers but since I cleaned everything, I didn't have the problem back...

Well, I let you see IN PICTURES, it will be clearer for you I think

PS: I reduced the size of the pictures for the forum but if you want the originals, I have in 13Mpix here...

pic 01.jpg -> IAC dirty
pic 02.jpg -> IAC dirty (another angel of view)
pic 03.jpg -> IAC clean
pic 04.jpg -> Place where the IAC goes, clean...

Thanks again A LOT for your help and hope this fixed my problem

Have a great day !

Looks good! Hard to tell, but from the small pictures, it didn't look too dirty before. But I can't tell if there's build up at the tip or not. Either way having a clean IAC and port never hurts!
