2000 5.9. code p1740, any one know what this means?

Yours comes up as P1740 TCC or O/D Solenoid Perf

It could be one of 2 things, the TCC/OD solenoid is shot or the Torque Converter is going bad. I would start simple and cheap and try replacing the solenoid (there are a few threads here on how to do it) and go from there..
