Cool 98 Dodge Durango Fan Clutch

I have a 5.2 and this is the 5th fan clutch/ sensor and thermostat/water pump. I have replaced in 2 yrs. I just don't know what the heck is going on, any ideas would be helpful.

Did you use an aftermarket clutch? If so that's the problem, get a mopar one (online or from the dealer). Or you could replace the mechanical fan all together with an electric one. I did and it was well worth it.

When I had my durango, I just removed the fan/clutch and never put anything in its place. I did have an additional electric fan for the transmission cooler, and that moved more than enough air for my rig.

The 98s and 99s didn't have the auxiliary electric fan.

I'm aware of that, I was just throwing down my experience.

I just wanted to point that out so the OP didn't think he was ok if he just ripped out his mechanical fan.

If you are using rebuilt water pumps that that is your problem. Only buy new ones, which obviously would not have a return core.

I have thought of using a electric fan, having used 5 different mfgs. products it just get annoying to change it again. The last fan clutch was the best for my car and it failed, my water pump is not a rebuilt it is factory just saying, went with a performance thermo this time, just crazy. Anyways thanks for the help. I would like to know your thought more on adding the electric fan though.

Isn't the 01-03 electric fan direct bolt on the earlier models?

If you go that route get a controller to bump the on to 185 degrees. On the 01-03 models the fan only comes on at 210* (too hot alone) or only when the AC is on when outside temps are 75* or higher.

It wasn't too difficult. I got a fan from a 3.8 Taurus at the junkyard (lots of hot rod guys use that fan) and got a controller from Dakota Digital for around $100. Without the weight of the fan on there throttle response is better, performance is better (especially since my clutch kept engaging all the time), and fuel economy is a bit better. IndyDurango has a whole huge *** thread on it that I used as a guide when I did mine, and posted info about mine in there too: Link
