Default 4x4 question / issues

I have a 98 5.9L 4x4 Durango SLT.

I have noticed 4x4 part time dash light when 4x4 is engauged.

1st question is; do I have full time 4x4 option? I only have 2x 4high and 4low on the lever.

2nd question is; when in 4x4, my driver side front and passenger side rear wheel are the only 2 thAt engauge. Is that normal? I know these are the only 2 that engauge because I got stuck and those were the only two spinning. This happens in 4L and 4H.

No. If you had FT 4WD it would say 4wd Auto.

As far as only two wheels spinning, thats because of the open differentials. Naturally, when you break traction, the power is sent to the wheel with the least resistance. This is why people get limited slip differentials. You will have true 4wd up until the point where you break traction though.

There's no auto on the 98-00 trucks. You'd have 2HI, 4HIPT, 4HIFT, N, & 4LO on the shifter if you had the full time case.

My 2000 says 4Hi Lock, 4wd, N and 4Lo lock. No 2wd option at all

I forgot they changed the shifter for 2000. I just realized something, how do you have a 5.2 4x4 that's a 2000? They supposedly only made the 5.2s 2wd in 2000.

Somebody swapped in a 5.2. The build sheet said it came with a 5.9. I didn't realize it when I got it, and I should have run the information or I never would have touched it. They did an awful job and messed up a bunch of stuff, but nothing that anybody would normally look at. I think they didn't realize it had a 5.9 originally, and they put what they "thought" was the direct replacement. It has been a nightmare, we had to drop the transmission because the flex plate they had on did not match the motor and was causing a vibration, took me forever to track it down.

Plus, I know there were limited models made in 2000 with the 5.2, but not sure about the 4wd configuration on them, or if it was limited to 2wd like you said. I really like the AWD, its nice to not have to mess with it. Plus I dont have to worry about trying to explain how to get it in and out of 4wd to the significant other, she can just hop in and go with snow on the ground or whatever.

Haha, i'm an advocate of tough love. If she doesn't want to learn how to properly operate it, then she can walk!

Eh. I guess you have a point. All you do is shift it into 4HI. Done and done. The only time anything is different is when you have to shift into 4LO which doesn't normally get used anyway.
