Tranny probs?
first off, I'd like to say that this is my first post on this, or any site like this one, so please bear with me. I have a 2000 (1st gen) durango. It's a 4.7l v8. I'm not exactly which tranny I have in it cause IDK where to look! Anyways, It's stuck in 1st gear and even in park @ idle it makes the awfullest clicking/grinding noise. The noise doesn't sound like it's coming out of the tranny, but it DOES sound like it's coming from where the tranny and engine meet. Would that be a torque converter? Also, before all of this, it would make noises as if you had a manual tranny in too high of a gear, or maybe like you were riding on a rumble strip. Going up a hill (basically, with a load on the tranny) it would be more likely to do this, but would do this on flat ground as well. I experience a loss of power and it does this unless i just totally lift off the accelerator. What could be causing this, and could it be related to the assumed problem with the torque converter? I know this is 2 different questions, and I'm sorry if that's not kosher, but I wanted to give some background leading up to the bigger problem.

Sometimes when a torque converter is going bad it will cause a shudder like feeling when it shifts gears. Drop the tranny pan and inspect whats in there. If there is alot of metal material in the pan that aint good. There will be some on a magnet in the pan as wear is normal and the magnet collects the filings so they don't go back into the fluid., but if you see metal floating around it's more then like time to rebuild like Hydro said. JMHO as I'm not a certified mech.
