You're still talking about buying parts on speculation. Measure the runout on the flanges first. It's your money though, so if the wallet works better for you than the toolbox, knock yourself out. That said, to me, waiting for UPS then swapping the axles shafts is way easier than doing the junk yard route and swapping in an unknown axle.

What speculation? What are you talking about? I explained everything in the first page and it looks like the axle shaft is the only next thing that can be bad. There is no point checking the flange or wheel hub or whatever, those are not being sold seperately (the rear ones) from the shaft AFAIK...

I believe he means to check them so you can verify that the parts are bad. Instead of assuming they are on speculation and process of elimination of what you know to check for.

Check what? Even if they are bad, I still need to buy shafts aren't I? They are not being sold seperately as I said before... But I may be wrong.

... and what if the dial indicator runout test says they are good? Another test assuming the run out is good, swap the brake drums side to side, see if things change? Hunker the drums down with lug nuts with the wheels off and do the runout test on the drums, which is the real surface the wheels mate to.

I was serious above, if you want to use your wallet to implement the test of bent shafts, go ahead. Me though? I never buy a replacement part unless I know the original is indeed bad. ... and I don't like to swap in an expensive assembly when only one component of it is bad.

well that post made me having doubts and I went to my mechanic again... This time I made him remove the wheels and drums to see the flange directly, and it was literally wobbling visible to the naked eye... That solved the question.

I also learned that my gear ratio is 3.55... and the shaft is 9.25.

Is it actually moving in and out like it's bent, or just moving up and down? If it's the latter it could just be bearings.

The main carrier is the same regardless of 3.55 or 3.92 gearing on the same type, however 8.25 to 9.25 is obviously a different carrier. All of the 9.25 axels are the same according to the shop manuals through the 1998-2003 Durango years. Also a LSD will be a different carrier then its counterpart.

9.25 Axel shafts:
Right – 52069388
Left - 52069389

The 8.25 carrier are the same as well but different from the 9.25.
Right – 52069512
Left - 52069513

The parts manuals state that in 2000 (yes the ionic year of transfer) they brought in the 8.25 however there are conflicting reports that it was brought in at least 1999.

Sounds like someone jumped the truck and landed hard, sorry to hear.
