towing
Ok guys, I just got my build sheet back from Dodge and I found out I have the 46re transmission with the 3.55 gears in it. I'm confused on this because when they sent me the build sheet they told me that the thing only has a towing capacity of 1850 pounds...I've been towing a boat that weighed 2400 pounds not including the trailer weight for the past 4 years and it towed just fine. Am I missing something here?
Not sure what they are talking about maybe GVW or something. A quick look in here provides you with lots of information: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...wers-faqs.html
Depends on whether it has the towing package. Here is what the 2003 D is rated at:
Tow Limit (lbs.)
Durango 2WD 4.7L V-8 (f) 4650
Durango 2WD 4.7L V-8 (g) 5950
Durango 2WD 5.9L V-8 (f) 5850
Durango 2WD 5.9L V-8 (g) 7550
Durango 4WD 4.7L V-8 (f) 4400
Durango 4WD 4.7L V-8 (g) 5700
Durango 4WD 5.9L V-8 (f) 5600
Durango 4WD 5.9L V-8 (g) 7300
(f) 3.55 axle ratio
(g) 3.92 axle ratio
2003 ratings were reduced from 2002 ratings partially based on Government regs. If the above works for your needs, the 2002 will meet or exceed those figures.

Most likely it is rated low because of your gear ratio of 3.55 but even for that it seams like a low number. An 01 with a 5.9 with 3.92 gear ratio is rated for 7350. Basically what that means is your truck can physically tow your boat, just Dodge is not going to tell you that you can another way of summing it up is covering there **** in case you do something stupid.

Ok so tell me this, if I were to swap out my front and rear differentials to the 3.92 would that be sufficient enough, or would I need to do something with the transmission? I did have the trans rebuilt a few years back.
That might be your "Dead Weight Hitch"?
Here is what I got when I ran my VIN through the VIN Decoder on this forum:
https://dodgeforum.com/forum/vindecoder.php
03 SXT w/ 4.7L and I got:
Dead Weight Hitch - Max Trailer Wt. 2000 lbs (2000.0 min/2000.0max)
Dead Weight Hitch - Max Tongue Wt. 200 lbs (200.0 min/200.0max)
Wt Distributing Hitch - Max Trailer Wt. 5750, 4450 lbs (4450.0 min/5750.0max)
Wt Distributing Hitch - Max Tongue Wt 575, 445 lbs (445.0 min/575.0max)
I have 3.55 Gearing with the 545rfe Transmission (and single speed transfer case) and the 9.35 rear axle.

I think that decoder is just a guide to the more common things that where used... when i typed in my VIN it told me i have a 3.55 gear ratio and i have verified with both my build sheet and the tag on the housing itself that they are 3.92 gearing..
You would be fine doing that but, i think the 1850 number you got is the rear axle capacity or the curb weight in the rear not the total towing capacity now that i think about it..

Well im not sure what these guys from chrysler are saying but they just confirmed that the total amount of trailer weight i can tow is the 1850 pounds. They must be missing something here. I think what im going to do is just try it out for the summer and see how it goes. If it starts to struggle at all ill swap out the differentials for the 3.92 gear ratio.
