On the quest for more grip!

Well, I don't have a ton of money to throw at this, and I wont be thrashing on it offroad. I dont mind if its cheap if it works and doesnt break.
If I got the Powertrax, would I get the one for the posi case or open case? Open case, right?

How can you say what the part number is when you don't know what size axel he has? The Powertrax No-Slip are the better version of the Powertrax line and people do like them. Here are some part numbers.
For the Chrysler Corporate 8.25" 10 bolt pumpkin: 92-0382-2905
For the Chrysler Corporate 9.25" 12 bolt pumpkin: 92-0392-3105
The next question is if they will even mount into the carrier? Has anyone even looked into it? I'm pretty sure they won't install unless you already have a LSD carrier in the first place because the actual housing (carrier) is different then that of the non-LSD carrier in which I have already stated.
My suggestion would be to call them once you find out what size carrier you currently have and tell them you do not have a LSD carrier, you have a open carrier which is a different carrier then see if they will even bolt up because I don't think they will.

When you look at the actual carrier the difference is where the spider gears go. On open carriers there is just a flat end. On LSD carriers there that flat end is milled further inside to make room for the clutch pack. So what I'm trying to tell you is that the length of the spiders (in which you replace with the kit) are different lengths for the different carriers of the same type.
I was looking on http://www.justdifferentials.com/PT9...-0392-3105.htm and it seems this one or part number 92-0392-3105 is the one you need and it will fit you non LSD carrier also known as non Trac-Lok carriers. Looks as if the manufacture is claiming the Positraction style is for the Trac-Lok LSD carriers.
Edit-----Oh for the second half of your question: Yes I've heard of people using them for numerous things especially in the Jeep side. They also like a few others as well. The one I posted you should like and should be fairly smooth. You will surely notice a difference in how the truck handles in various conditions.

When I read it there is a part number supplied and a secondary question on the type in which you were referring, but without knowing what exact carrier he had it was still up in the air at that time. I re-read it again and at least that's how I see the dual question was asked. I was simply stating there are actually 2 part numbers dependent on what he had OEM.
