I don’t think they ever offered it to the Ram, only 231 and both 241’s.

Anyway, I've never seen a 1998-1999 Durango 5.9L with a 242 in my area. Sure seen lots of 5.2L and 5.9L's here with 231's on both. For that matter I’ve only seen one 3.9L. In fact most of the members I've meet even here don't have them as well?

Let’s break this down a bit.

If I remember correctly (and I've been wrong before) the option to get a NV242 (aka...NV 242 HD or NV242) only sold as an upgraded traction control system because of the Jeep push. It also is my understanding the NV242 only came on the 5.9L engine that would leave me to believe there isn't that many out there. I once read somewhere only 18% of all 1998-1999 Durango’s have the 5.9L engine. Also it's always been my understanding that the 242 was only paired with the 5.9L, 46RE, and heavy duty tow package which again was mainly a option advantage of the Plus version.

Another thing I find fascinating, I've only seen the NV242 paired with the larger 9.25' corporate rear differential.

What have you seen in your neck of the woods?

 

If you trust the vehicle selection tool on autozone's website it's about 60%/40% biased towards 318s in 98 and 99.

The truck I bought the nv242 transfer case from was a base model 99 360. If I'm not mistaken Jeremy's 99 318 came with the nv242 from the factory. Most of the trucks I've seen at the junkyard have already had the engine, transmission, and transfer case yanked out of them before I got there, so I couldn't tell you what they were.

9-97 build date.... mine also came factory with the 9.25' differential stuffed with 3.92 gears.

 

all the 98 and 99's here with both the 318 and the 360 (that i have seen) have been paired with the 242. Now that i think about it more they all have had the 9.25' corporate real differential as well. It's usually the Dakotas (as odd as it sounds) that are the ones the commonly have the 231.

Just for the record, mine did not come with the tow package and i have never seen a 3.9L in a Durango.. I just assumed it was a ugly toilet humor powered rumor that they would put something that degrading in a beastly themed truck but, if i ever see one ill be sure to smack the owner for buying one and ill snap tons of pics (of the motor of course)

And my brother claims someone at his highschool had a 1st gen Durango with a V6 badge on it. I think I remember looking it up and there were less than 100 V6s made in 99 only.

 

Id have to agree 90% of the East Coasters don't know how to drive or driving is getting in the way of the cell phone time.

 

Got the return authorization, so I'm gonna ship that wrong switch back to partsgeek tomorrow.
