Before you replace anything hook it up to a manifold gauge set and see what the pressures are.

I would run and then run faster from the mechanic, Both front and rear expansion valves and the dryer can be removed without removing the dash. the only part of the A/C system that requires the dash to be removed is the evaporator. Sounds like he's just guessing how to do it.

Agreed 100% ... could just be that its either low on 134a or developed a leak and the system emptied out. If there is no places that look broken the schrader valves inside the service ports are common failures on a/c systems.

Well if you get unlucky and the expansion valve bolts break off in the evaporator (almost happened to me) you would have to remove the dash to replace the evaporator, so maybe that's what the guy meant.

Agreed with above. Expansion valve and dryer are in the engine compartment. You can always go by wallyworld and buy yourself a couple cans of R134 and a recharge kit. cost you about $50.

While you can it's not the right way to fix it. You have no way of knowing how much refrigerant is in the system without vacuuming it down and measuring how much you put in. Not having the right amount of refrigerant in the system will cause it to not perform very well. Not to mention a lot of those kits have extra stuff like stop leak and more oil in them that is bad for the system.

That said if you are going to put refrigerant in yourself, make sure you get pure r134a, and only add a little at a time until the system starts cooling well.
