Default Engine knock-3knocks p/sec - only in drive

Durango Fam,
I hope everyone is well. My trusted D just started its first engine knock after a great 10 years of ownership and is now at 220k miles. Runs like a top and I have never had to do any major engine repairs. The sound only starts while the car is in drive. It sounds as if it is coming from an area right over the steering wheel while I am driving.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Do you only hear the "knock" when accelerating and not idling? Is that what you meant when only in drive?

Yes, I have taken it to the dealership because a friend is the service rep there and shoots straight with me on repairs. Encourages me to take it out to another location if I can get something cheaper. I would say it is maintained but work has not been done exactly to schedule.

So the knock is interesting. I drove the truck the other day for one trip and did not hear it but 90% of drives you hear it. To answer your question I do hear it at idle and when I accelerate it increases in cadence. Over the last 3 weeks it has become more audible but even the loudness of the knock increases and decreases depending on the ride.

I hope this helps and thanks to you guys for responding.

Best,
RE Guy

It is entirely possible that you have one or more broken manifold bolts.

These can sometimes be misinterpreted as lifter knock.

When you accelerate does it sound like "cards in the spokes"?

If possible, take some video and link it here. Might help you get some answers quicker.

Finally have a audio file of sound. Notice near the end of the file the sound gets louder because I move the phone from the passenger side of the car to the drivers side in front of the steering wheel.
