Durango R/T 5.9 Transmission 46re problem
Hello, my Dodge Durango R/T 2002 have transmission problem. When i bought it (used), always start with second gear and slips in second, third and fourth is ok. Even if i put lever in manual 1 or manual 2, starts with second, maybe in manual 2 second gear slips a little less. Trouble code: P0455 (i think this not affect transmission), P0748 and P1765. I figured out, that transmission relay is not powered from PCM with ground - number 85 on relay, so transmission is unpowered. I check wiring between PCM out and Trans relay and it's ok. First i change governor solenoid and governor presure sensor/trans. temp. sensor with new, just to be sure. Then, for testing purpose, disconect number 85 on trans. relay apart from PCM to avoid any damage to PCM and manually ground trans. relay num. 85 and power up transmission. Now trans. start with first - i don't know if slips or not because accelerate fast, then shift in second - second slips pretty much, 3. and 4. ok. Also problem is, when you drive in third, fast enough that there is no need to 3-2 downshift and you for a moment leave a throttle and then again press - let's say - less than half throttle, trans. immediately shift to second and next moment again in third, because there is no need for second. This is very annoying. Please, what else can i do / check about this problem. Note that in my country Durangos are very rare (maybe 2 or 3) and it's very hard to find a technician who have any clue about automatic transmission. Thanks for answer and sorry for mistakes about language

The 46re is essentially a 727 torqeflite 3spd transmission with an overdrive unit. Because of this you can completely unlpug the transmission electronics and manually shift through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (D). Sounds like you did something similar to this and it worked. Now with the new electronics it uses all gears if I'm understanding you correctly. The next thing I would do is fresh fluid and band adjustment. The procedure for the band adjustment is in this thread https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...to-tranny.html
Thanks for answer, so the next thing is band adjustment (oil and filter are new). You say, that this transmission without electric power can be manually shifted in 1.,2. or 3. range? In my case, without power, trans. work without first range, even if i put lever in manual 1. When i power it up, work with all ranges. I'm afraid that there is valve body malfunction..

Yes without power it can be manually shifted to 1, 2, or 3. If 1 isn't working when the shifter in 1 when you have no electonics connected this could be a valve body malfunction but I would do the band adjustments first. These transmissions are weird because the rear band is engaged when the shifter is in first (with or without electronics) but not when in D (with or without electronics). You could also have issues with the rear band servo. How's reverse? The rear band only is engaged in reverse and shifter in 1.

Reverse is ok, nothing about hard engagement or slipping. When i find some time, i perform band adjustment and report if problem is solved, thanks.

Just thought I might add that I just recently had an issue with my D where it shifted up and down late between 1&2 and sometimes 2&3, it was all fixed by adjusting the bands. The one accessed from inside the pan was very loose. Adjust those bands, its cheap and easy.
