5.2 Timing/Fuel Sync Issue
Man I really messed up. Don't know where to begin.
I had to replace the rear main seal on my 98 dodge durango. Tore the thing apart replaced the seal but didnt seat the oil pump right. Put it all together, started the truck, and ended up binding the oil pump drive shaft, so I had to tear the thing apart again. Replaced the oil pump and oil pump drive shaft. Out of ignorance or frustration of doing the job twice, I didn't note which way the slot on the drive gear was oriented. I marked the dist housing however which I think doesnt make a diffference. Any how after I installed the dist my truck wont start. Probably because the rotor is no where near where it was when I pulled it becaue i'm an idiot and didnt put the drive pump shaft back in orientated the correct way. This is when I admit, I really effed it up.
Any suggestions on how to go about fixing it? I read elsewhere that you really need a scan tool (DRBIII) tool to get the sync perfect. If I can jut get it to the dealer that would be great

Well the cam sensor is in the distributor, so as long as the distributor is lined up with cylinder 1 at TDC, I'd think it would be ok. Not sure what all you might have moved around though.
Hey thanks that_guy. I was doing all sorts of research and everything was coming up that I had to index the distributor and hook up a scan tool and all sorts of stuff. I followed your simple response...Using a coat hanger I lifted the oil pump drive gear through the distributor hole rotated it so when I dropped the drive gear back down the slot would line up to position #1 on the cap. Fired right up.
Yeah, there's no indexing of the distributor to be done with these engines. The computer handles all of it with the crank sensor on the flexplate and the cam sensor in the distributor.
