Default 1st Gen 2002 dodge durango slt+ 4.7L 4wd problems

When reversing in 4wd low & high and turning it seems as if maybe there is maybe resistance in the rear causing the front end to bind up and impossible to steer and make all kinds of sounds which like all the components are under extreme pressure. But in 2wd it makes a very minor rub sound and minor hop feel about one time per tire rotation. Have noticed a heavy gear grease between the u joint and rear differential directly across from the center of the u joint. Any help would be appreciated .

What are you driving on when you are in 4wd? If you are on pavement the front end will bind due to the front tires turning at different speeds. You should check the u joints in the front axle to make sure they are in good shape. I don't think the rear axle would cause problems with the front end. As far as the grease at the rear, check the u-joint seals to make sure that one is in good condition. The rear axle has gear oil in it so the grease can't be coming from there. Most likely the u-joint.

I completely rebuilt the propeller shaft u joint and cv joint. And I was on dry pavement. I am basically rebuilding the front end because my tie rods were shot ,control arm bumpers didn't exist anymore, replaced cv axle, sway bar bushings, so the front tires do have choppy tread and obviously causing some noise but not the amount being made. So I changed the fluid and greatly reduced that now I'm sure it's just some tire noise. The rear u joints are next in line and I know they are due but are not just completely shot. When I was backing up it was a pretty sharp turn but man I'm here to tell you the front end was twisted something fierce my. 4wd acted up several years ago and didn't want to come out but now seems to be engaging as it should.

You shouldn't drive in 4wd lock on dry pavement, you will break something.

I get that, but when your trying diagnose the problem you have to do what you have to do. It's had this issue for quite some time and comes and goes. The very first time I was driving in the snow and I couldn't get it to disengage. Just trying to get it fixed before the snow hits this year.

I was saying that because in 4wd on pavement there is going to be binding and wheel hop that could be pointing you in the wrong direction. Anyway, u-joints are cheap enough, I'd replace them and see if that takes care of the issue.

Yeah, I was going to say, don't drive in 4wd on hard surfaces. It can and will break something. If you fan get it to come out of 4wd, try backing up a little bit, that should unlock the front axle.
