03 4.7 Durango- Best replacement engine?
Hi there, new to the forum. I live in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota and I work at small body/ mechanical combination shop. As you can imagine, we end up buying a lot of vehicles people don't want to pour money into. I happened across an 03 Durango SXT with the 4.7 (4X4) with the auto trans. The engine overheated and the owner decided to just keep on trucking!
Needless to say she fried it. The guys at work keep talking about "Powertain Products" reman 4.7 ranting and raving about the million mile warranty. I have read some not-so-good reviews about their engines. I figured you guys would be the best people to ask! Where can I get an engine to make this a reliable vehicle? I am not ultra concerned about cost. The truck had 90,xxx and is in good shape and I want to make sure I do this correctly. I can R&I engine and components myself no problem. I have seen several re manufactured engines online and I have also looked at a hand full of crate motors. What do you think?
Jasper makes good engines. Or a crate motor. Or pull one from a junk yard. These engines are fairly bulletproof unless the overheated as you have seen. Cast iron block and aluminum heads don't work well together when it gets hot. Lol
Not sure if it is compatible but worth looking into. Purchase or find a 4.7 out of a newer dakota truck. i think around 2009+ year? I cannot remember the year that Dodge bumped the hp to 315hp and 330lb torque from the 4.7 engine.
the 2009 dakota has the higher hp numbers (according to the window sticker on my dads 09), as for if it would fit, im sure it would physically, but you may also need the wire harness and controller as the new 4.7 has 16 spark plugs (combustion and exhaust plugs) and a few other improvements in the monitoring from the original that was in these trucks (1st or 2nd gen of the engine in these trucks, 4th in the dakota)
