So, I bought this 02 Durango RT knowing it needed rack n pinion and tires. But as I get into it further, I realize it has a couple other issues that I'm not sure if I want to deal with. One, the 4x4 selector lights do not come on when you try to put it in full time four wheel drive instead of all wheel drive, and it's definitely not going into low. I got it to work 1 time since I've owned it, this is not a really big issue for me because I know it's working in AWD. Second, it only has one key with it and it is not an original so I'm being told the chip may not be powerful enough to turn off the security light on the dash. Also not a big deal for me but I'm concerned it could create bigger issues, such as, some people are saying it could damage the main computer. I've heard it's over $500 plus you have to get the dealership to sync it to the truck. I guess my concern is since the four wheel drive is not working correctly and other little electric issues, and the key is not correct, is the computer possibly going to go out soon?
That seems all like little stuff combined with a huge amount of hearsay, and you're getting negatively psyched. Get some facts on what it takes to deal with the issues, like actually go to a local key place for a start.
Most R/Ts very rarely see 4hi or 4lo, so it's common for it to be crotchety. I cycle mine once every 6 months or so.

Whoever told you the key is going to kill the computer is a moron. The worst that would happen is the key just won't turn off the alarm and it won't start. Get another key online (check ebay), take it to the dealer (some locksmiths might be able to do it too) and have them cut/program it. Shouldn't be more than 30 min to an hour of labor.
As far as the 4wd goes, AWD is full time 4wd, the position marked 4hi is lock, as is 4lo, and those part time 4wd positions can't be used on pavement. I'm not too familiar with those electronically shifted ones, but there's a module to monitor is and a motor on the case.

I got the info from a local locksmith who wants to cut a key that's compatible for 159 bucks , he can cut one just like the one I have ( a clone I guess youd call it ) for $89. Walmart can do em for $59 but it doesn't read on their key scanner thing. This truck runs its *** off right now (and the tranny even shifts great, very impressive for an older mopar !)
So I went back to the locksmith today ( the guy who knows what he is talking about is there today ) , he said if the key starts it and it stays running and the alarm doesn't go off then everything is ok . If its going to be a problem youll know as soon as you insert the key and try to start it.
