The motor was "almost bone dry" and you only added a quart of oil?

All i had in the garage, I just picked up supplies for a full oil change today. It was more for me to get it started not to run it on.

Hands down a couple of "Hardest" repairs for a Durango are the heater core and transmission. The Auction notes said it smokes I haven't seen it do that but we will see after I get new fluids in her. The paper work in the truck said the previous owners bought it in February of 2015 for $5208. They over paid for sure, but if I do the heater core myself its really only a $50 repair, maybe $150 since I'll probably replace the evap while I'm in there. Also if I can do the Trans myself its $400 for the kit and torque converter. After those headaches I (cross my fingers) am in a mechanically sound truck for under $2000.
most ftlb torque wrenches don't go that low. Inlb ones are usually for lower torques like the bands.

Well pulled the tranny pan off today, and not looking good. Lot of sludge around the magnet i'm thinking the bands are worn out. This is the symptoms I'm having.

* No reverse at all
* Will only move in [2]
* Sometimes will go in [D] but mostly nothing
* Wines in Neutral almost like the pump is starved

I'm going to replace the filter, add new fluids, and adjust the bands. Then maybe three hail marry's to the mopar gods ad see where that gets me. I'm pretty sure this is going to be a rebuild though.

That trans is most likely toast.

It looks like you bought a parts truck, or a money pit.

Damn that trans pan looks like motor oil from a neglected diesel...
Didn't look around here to much but on the 2nd gen truck side there is a sticky that is called something like montec? 4th or 5th page in here gives an awesome list for a stout rebuild. The whole sticky is a good read for the most part

Neglected is the right word for sure.

Updated I got her fluids and filter changed and adjusted the rear band while I was in there. Drove it today and got all the gears back including REVERSE which I was surprised about. I really didn't think It would do anything. Now my issue is that it want shift when it should, I have to let off the gas for the shift or the RPM's climbs to high IMO. I'm crawl back under after XMAS and see if I can adjust the front bands and see if I get a change. Overall some progress.
