1999 Durango - Transmission issue
Good morning to all you. I have been reading these forums for a while now and I have found a few answers/heads-ups etc. Very interesting and informative community. Pretty cool.
Now to my issue:
1999 Dodge Durango, 5.9 4x4 SLT
About a year ago my D did not want to shift into second gear most of the time. I dropped the tranny pan and replaced the filter, solenoid (kit from ebay @ $135) and fluid. All back together and problem fixed. Recently it started to shift between 1st and 2nd, back and forth, when starting on an incline. It would also start to hesitate again shifting from 1st to 2nd and when coming to a stop you could feel it not just shifting down to first but hesitate.
No issues on driving on flat, even surface nor in higher gears on the freeway, shifting all the way through without hesitation.
Now, a coupld of days ago I get off the freeway to a stop light, car is in first gear but does not want to shift into second. I pull over as to let traffic by. I accelerate and the car starts rolling until it drops out of first gear and just revs. Stop the car, reverse works, shift back in D and it goes to just drop out of gear again. Turn it off, check transmission fluid. Level is good, looks clean, notice a little smoke coming from the tranny dip-stick shaft. Start the car again, 1st gear accelerates and drops out again. Left it sitting to cool off for about 1 hour. Got it home by starting the car, shift in first gear, accelerates fine for about 3-5 seconds before it drops out of gear and just revs. Turn it off, start it, 1st gear, 3-5 seconds and good full acceleration, drops out of gear, turn car off, start again...and on and on.
So, reverse works, car engages in first gear, accelerates for a few seconds and then it drops out of gear. Once in a while after dropping out and the RPM goes down it re-engages in to 1st but just for maybe a second.
Any ideas? Hints?
Love this thing. Engine rules, drives just great. Would hate having to sell or junk it.
Really appreciate any responses.
Thank you very much!!!
