Default Cracked Transfer Case

I have a 2003 Durango with 190K miles, 4.7l, auto, 4x4. About 2 years ago the transfer case cracked into and I replaced it with a used one. It has cracked again and needs to be replaced! What can cause this? Is it a common problem with the Durangos?

Which t-case? Any lifts or alterations to the vehicle drive train? Do you drive it in 4HI on pavement? No, they don't 'just crack', not common.

It's the NV233 T-case. I only drive in 4hi in snowy slick weather. Not very often.

The only non-factory mods is that I replaced the front driveshaft several years ago with one that has a rear cross-type u-joint, not the factory cv type u-joint. When I replace the t-case again, I'm going to see if this driveshaft is balanced and true. Do you think this type of driveshaft could be causing the cracking? It has the same type of u-joints that the rear drive shaft has.

Where does it crack? What is the internal damage?
