Post New Heads vs Old Heads

I need to swap out a blown 4.7L in my 02 Durango. I'm hearing about old heads that have problems vs new heads which don't. How can I tell if an engine has the old or new heads? Is there a casting number somewhere?

Never owned a 4.7L so I can't say. Now this whole forum is dying. Try dakota-durango.com(I use this one) is still very active.

iv never heard about a change in the head design for the 4.7 to address a cracking issue, afaik the only change was when they went to a 2plug per cylinder system.
