Default 4wd troubleshoot

4wd not working. Quit all at once. No noise. Switch seems loose and no lights come on when I attempt to put in 4wd. 2001 How do I find out if the switch is the problem and get at it if it is.

My 2002 is doing the same thing...the light at the switch does not light, and no 4wd. Called the dealer parts dept. to see what they thought. He looked up my transfer case and told me it is probably the "gear motor" in the transfer case. $360 dollar part! Anyone else have any light to shed before I drop some bucks?

This was a somewhat common problem with "Ford exploders" which I used to own. The diagnosis was most often the shift motor on the transfer case. The remedy in some cases involved smacking the motor with a soft faced hammer a few times in order to loosen it up and get it to make proper electric contact. The better way of course is to jack up the vehicle well and take the motor off for a good cleaning including the electrical contacts. I'm not sure how exposed the motor is on the D but if it is easily accessed I recommend the above. Electric motors will generally not go bad especially ones that are used as infrequently as the shift motor, but their proximity to the road lends them to fouling by road and off road debris. I'm so happy I got my D with the manual linkage on the floor.....I hate when an electrical problem prevents a perfectly good machine from doing its job.

I am having the same problem. I pulled the dash a part the the switch wires has power to it. So do you think it could be the switch. Or has anyone found anything else out.

I have the same exact problem on my 2001! In fact, it just started happening last night while I was at a dealership to turn it in. Murphy's Law!!!
