Steering issue after Durango gets up to temperature
hey everyone!
I have a 99 Durango 5.9 4x4, and am having a ridiculous time trying to fidure out what could be causing this steering issue that I’ve been having for be better part of a year.
Everything is fine until it heats up. The steering becomes hard to manage and seems like it’s trying to freeze up. I’ve changed out the steering gear box, pitman arm, idler arm, and power steering pump. I have yet to do the CV half shaft or redo the upper and lower ball joints.
I wknt lie, I’m feeling a little defeated and getting tired of throwing parts at this car.
Id love to hear any ideas, or if you had the same issue with your Durango/Truck. Let me know!
Thank you in advance!
shannon.

It seems like the two major suspects for that would be the pump or gearbox. What brand of those did you put on?
I tried replacing my original pump last year because of a leak. The cardone pump I put on worked for less than 50 miles then quit. Returned it and got an ac Delco pump, and it wouldn't work right out of the box. I also put on a cardone gearbox. It took a lot more force to turn the wheel that the stock box and had even more slop. Returned it and got one from redhead. It works normally but still has a lot of slop in it.
The point here being, just becuase you replaced a part doesn't mean it's working properly. Whenever it gets hard to turn the wheel, jack up the front end and try to turn them then (be sure to jack it up safely). If they turn fine in the air you might just have a low pressure situation from the pump. If it still binds start looking for other things. I'd still be suspect of the box at that point.
