Default 5.9 TV Cable Adjustment?

If I adjust the TV cable per spec, basically zero slack, the trans dosn't shift from 1st to 2nd at WOT (rev limiter kicks in). I've been on/off nagged by this problem for years, even through a rebuilt trans and engine mods. I thought I had it fixed by putting some slack in the cable (out of spec), so the trans thinks I not really at WOT, and shifts. It's been better, but today it rev-limited again. WOT isn't a daily thing of course, but sometimes this old 60's Woodward Ave street racer just likes to, you know, crank it. Any ideas?

When I adjusted mine years ago I kind of did it by feel. Adjust it a bit, go for a drive and see how it feels. The most annoying thing for me was it wouldn't want to do the 2-3 shift under 25 mph or so when there was little slack. Finally just got it to a place where it seemed like it was shifting at the right times when just cruising around under part throttle conditions (keep in mind you don't want the shifts so soft that it's causing excessive clutch wear). Mine seems to shift a bit too early at WOT (by a couple hundred rpm at most), but you can always hold a gear with the shifter.
