Default Bearings?

Yesterday I was checking my rear brakes and I heard a noise. I grabbed my hub with brake drum removed and moved up and down and side ways. I heard a small tick all the way around. I'm wondering if both of the bearings are bad because they both moved the same or if there should be some small play in the bearings? Anybody ever play with the rear bearings or replaced them that can give me the tricks if there is any?
