P0700 and erratic behavior in overdrive
2001 Durango 4X4 4.7
So I was on the highway yesterday and while driving my truck suddenly downshifted and I was nearly thrown from my seat! it kept behaving badly and eventually the MIL came on. I was able to make it home, but I had to turn the OD off. It only seems to do this in overdrive, and it doesn't feel like slipping, more of an erratic shifting issue, like it can't decide what to engage when its supposed to be engaging overdrive. I got a P0700 code, but don't know what to make of it, as its not too helpful of a code to be honest...

Well, it is going to a transmission shop tomorrow morning (I wanted them to look at it today, oh well...) and I'll see what they say. I had done the Jeep CG TCM swap, and had the original TCM the truck came with, so I switched those out just to see, so I can say for certain its not the TCM... Because of the way it just seems to almost flutter between gears, I truly think the issue is in the valve body, my honest opinion is the solenoid pack, but we will find out. Unfortunately neither me nor Dad have any desire to deal with this, so something that always promised to be inconvenient now also promises to be expensive... Oh well!

I was going to post that earlier, just take it to a shop. A trans doesn't last forever, and is a huge job for a regular home mechanic. I was born and raised in Detroit, have done about every repair on many vehicles over the years, but I decided long ago to leave an auto trans to a decent shop. I know how they work, whats involved in a rebuild, just choose not to bother with it myself. In well over 50 years of wrenching, I've only needed three trips to a trans shop.
Well, it seems sorry doesn’t really begin to describe the state of affairs... The good news it’s this time I can feel confident it was done right! The bad news: the last guy that worked on this... The first time I got it back from him it was leaking out the bell housing, it was after this that I was told they couldn’t figure it out and were forced to install a brand new one. Turns out it was worn out gaskets on the front cover, so they just globes on silicone! They also found the wrong frictions in the overdrive clutch hub! Ugh! And the broken input hub that caused it to be brought in... what a mess!
