Default Erratic oil gauge

I have an issue with my oil gauge on my 03 SLT, 4.7. just recently, the gauge reads normal while driving, but when I stop, it drops to 1/4 then to E, then back to 1/4. The oil is full. Could my sending unit be on it's way out? Mileage is about 220,600.
it started doing this about 2 weeks ago after I had our Walmart do an oil change on it. It never did this before, and I bought the Durango in April.

One last thing, can I bump up to a thicker oul in the Summer here, in Arizona?
Thanks

You can replace the sender to start with but it would be better to install a mechanical gauge to get a better idea of what’s going on. (Identify if it’s the sensor or the oil pump). Using a slightly thicker oil in summer won’t hurt anything. But I’d figure out the pressure issue first.

Thanks jkeaton. I saw an article somewhere on how to run a temp oil gauge. Is this a common issue with the Durango, or the 4.7 engine?

This is a common issue on any vehicle that has an oil pressure sensor. Back in the 60's, and before, the various manufacturers could make an oil pressure sensor that would outlast the rest of the vehicle. These days though, I am surprised if it lasts till the next oil change.

This is the exact oil pressure switch you need. I have the same year truck/engine. Get Mopar so you never have to worry about it again.

The switch is located right above the oil filter. I pulled mine with a small channel lock as it was too big to fit my wrenches.
