Default transfer case shift problem

Hello: I have a 2002 Durango with a 4.7. When I switch from 2 to 4 wheel drive it doesn't seem to go all the way in to 4x4 and makes noises. The switch light seems to work as it always had. Thinking it might be the transfer case shift motor. How difficult is it to replace ? What else could it be ? Hope someone can help. Ron

Define 'makes noises'. ...sounds like what, whine, clunk, grind? Do you mean noises while shifting/engaging? ...while driving?

Hello Jeeperdon: Sounds like a grinding clunking noise when I switch to four wheel drive while moving. Not on a hard surface , mainly snowy icy roads. Not spinning the tires just kind of coasting so front and rear axles are turning the same speed , just doesn't seem to go all the way into 4x4 position.Haven't had any problems before.
