Default Heater core , A/C evaporator core

Hello: I have to replace my heater core on my 2003 4.7 Durango SLT Plus. I was told to also replace the A/C evaporator core . I wanted to know if the evaporator core replacement was necessary.as it costs over 400.00 for the factory part alone..I have 100,000 miles on it. Is there a big failure rate on the evap cores ? I received an estimate from my local Dodge dealer for the heater core and it was around $800.00 for the job and with the A/C evaporator core replacement it was $1700.00. Hope someone can help. Thank You . Ron

That seems a tad steep..... considering they will be in the area anyway..... Wonder if they are charging you labor twice.....

Hi the evap should be at least taken out and cap ends off and clean the outside of the evap coil off personally ide order both ac and heater through crackauto and take the time and replace yourself took my 14 yr old at that time the weekend to replace all and reassemble .. if the ac looks dirty inside use a ac flush on it and definitely change the 12 dollar filterdrier for ac why gamble?
