Default Clock spring

Hello: I have a 2003 Durango SLT Plus AWD with 4.7. My mechanic said I need a new clock spring for the air bag. Is there a way for me to check it. Also I know the O E M part is the way to go but I'm on SS Disability and funds are extremely tight. Any one use aftermarket clock springs ? Any good brand to use ? Hope someone can help. Thanks Ron

Is your airbag lite on? Did it set a code?

Do your other steering wheel controls work??

Hello: Yes the air bag light is on, at first it would come on intermitantly , now it,s on all the time. My mechanic told me the code is for the clock spring. All other steering wheel functions seem to work o-k .

I would almost be tempted to test the clock spring, but, playin' with airbags is farking dangerous, and a wrong move can get ya dead....... Clockspring really isn't that difficult to change though, if you have the right tools. (which you could probably rent from your local parts store, if you were feeling adventurous. ) An aftermarket part would likely be fine, when properly installed.

With the air bag lite on, best to take it in, and have someone check it out. Could just go to the parts store, and see if their scanner will pull SRS codes. See what it's whining about.

I used the Dorman from Rockauto, worked fine. They have different versions depending on the controls you have on your steering wheel. Not a hard job, always be careful with the airbag of course, you will probably need a steering wheel puller. I managed to break the plastic pins on the clockspring on the first attempt to install, so don't force it on the shaft.
