Default Engine identification

Question for the hive mind....is there a definitive way to tell what year and engine is? I know how to tell the 4.7l apart from the 5.2l/5.9l but as to year, I'm kinda stumped.

Thanks

Steve

Generally, there will be something cast into the side of the block that gives that flavor of info. On the 5.2/5.9 engines, its on the drivers side of the block, toward the bottom.

If I can find the number is it easy to figure out the year or is there a reference location on the web to decipher it?
