Default Aux cooling pump

I noticed this odd pump looking thing on the passenger side fender near the firewall. It's part of the cooling system. What is this thing for? I see it on rockauto. They call it an aux cooling pump. Seems a little overkill to have an electric and mechanical pump but it does not look big enough to support engine cooling and is in line with the heater core. Does it help get heat to the cabin faster or something?

Do you have rear heat in yours? The presence of the pump would imply that you do.

Nope, no rear heat or AC and I do not have third row seating.
