I recently purchased a 99 Durango 5.9 that has just been rebuilt and had to get it rebuilt again due to rod knocking \ bearings and went ahead and got parts to replace the crankshaft in the prrocess. Now the truck was running fine other than the knocking whenever mechanic pulled it off!! I get it back and apparently there was a fire in the engine compartment due to a gas line leak but now my alternator is not charging my battery and when I take the terminals off - the engine dies. I've checked all the fuses can't find any other wires that weren't connected {there were a CPL} and don't know what else to do anybody have any insight or perhaps service manual?

 

Voltage regulator is part of the PCM on your truck. You can generally find service manuals in electronic versions for 20 or 30 bucks, and it makes troubleshooting a LOT easier.....

 

Don't discount a bad alternator, especially if it's a parts store special one. They last about a year at best.
