Default 1998 Dodge Durango Transmission leak

Hi everyone, just made an account and I’m looking for some advice on my 98 Durango. Truck just crossed 210k miles but for a while now, maybe the past 20-25 thousand miles I’ve noticed a leak and I believe it is coming from the transmission because that is the only fluid that gets low when I notice the leak underneath. Basically anytime I park the truck on a steep incline with the front end being higher than the rear, it will leak transmission fluid almost immediately but when it’s back on level ground the leak slowly stops. So needless to say I’ve been staying away from any steep inclines and have been monitoring the fluid levels closely and topping off when needed and it’s been running and shifting great but now I’m looking for a fix. I’m assuming it’s going to be a seal I’m just not sure which seals are most likely to cause this type of leak. If anyone knows what this might be, let me know!

Thanks,

Dan

You need to get under it and pinpoint where the leak is originating from and go from there. Most likely the transmission pan, but you won't know until you look.

yup, gotta clean it off and look for where the leak comes from. likely the pan or the seal on the output shaft between the trans and transfer case.

My first thought is you may have a bad pan gasket. If you lose fluid based on parking on an incline, I can't think of another reason other than a bad gasket on the pan.

Since you say it leaks fast with front end up.... wash off the area with engine cleaner. Wait till dry then jack up the front end and get under it, so you can see where it leaks from.
