2000 Durango 5.9 engine vibration
2000 Durango 5.9 engine vibration The car developed an noticeable vibration that was most prevalent from idle to 1500 RPM. A search of the posts on various sites gave several reasons for it, but in my case it was the harmonic damper on the front of the engine. After 20 years, it had spit out about 1/3 of the insulating rubber and was running maybe 20 or 30 thousandths elliptically. So bad I could actually see light through it. I bought a stock Dormann equivalent and the car runs smooth as silk again. It's a bit of a job, as I had to pull the bumper and move the radiator out of the way to get the puller in. The loaner vib damper puller from O Riley will work, if you drill and tap the old damper for the puller bolts. Otherwise, I guess you'd have to use the Dodge specified puller with jaws. The new one went on using the the main bolt to squeeze it on, but lube it well and go slow, as it will only catch a few threads initially. 180 foot pounds is the torque.

You have to be careful installing new dampers using the bolt to pull it on. Really it is better to use a damper installer tool that threads into the crank, then you turn the nut on the installer. Much less likely to cause damage to the crank threads that way (which would make for a very bad day) because while the threads are being pulled on in the crank, they're not turning..
