Default 4.7 tuning question(s)

Are there any good tune chips for the 4.7? Would it be worth the expense to go custom tuning? What would a custom tune cost? Are there any recommendations for a tune chip? I don't know much about tuning, so any information as far as that goes, is more than welcomed. Thank you for your time, and any advice!

The 'chips' out there are snake oil. Hooking up two wires, and getting 25 horsepower is a big, fat, lie.

A 'tune', rewrites the programming of the PCM. You can get a bit more power/torque from it, but, they run 3-4 hundred bucks, and you get maybe 10 hp out of it. Some tunes, that give you more than that... require premium fuel... so, keep that in mind too. A custom tune is really only needed when you make significant changes to the engine. On a stock motor, a custom tune is simply a waste of money.

Several companies likely make tuners for your truck. Best bet is to see what's out there, see what the reviews look like, take it from there.

What is your goal? As stated above, chips are a waste of money. Lots of us in the 3rd gen Dakota section with the 4.7's used Superchips 3865 tuner. Not sure those are available anymore but you could check their website and see whats available now. Generally, out of the box, there are 3 tunes provided.

At this moment, I'm just trying to learn what I can, and see what I could get with it being mostly stock. Eventually, once I have the parts, I'm going to be rebuilding her with higher compression and better cylinder heads, as well as rebuilding or the trans with some more high performance parts, I know at that point, a custom tune will be necessary. At the moment, i'm working on rebuilding the suspension, after I'm done with that, I'll be moving on to rebuilding the axles. All I've done performance wise, is put a scrapyard hood with a scoop on it, a cold air intake, and fully straightpiped it, which will be changing soon, I plan on HO cams and intake, but I have to find them first, and I'm currently still debating most everything. My end goal is to make it a 4wd drag rig, and show the world how under rated the 4.7's and the durango's are. Sorry for my rambling, talking about it is very exciting for me.
