Default Transmission Whine 1998 Dodge durango SLT

I recently started noticing a whine in my transmission of my beloved Durango SLT. It has the 318.

it is only heard when it is in drive or reverse. The whine seems to follow engine speed and the pitch changes accordingly as the gears change. I also noticed that the whine stops once the torque converter locks when the truck reaches crusing speed. I also noted that my overdrive stopped working a week or so after the whine started. I changed my battery after it went bad and noticed that the computer had reset and the overdrive started working again. With all of these bizarre occurrences, I hope I can get some advice as to what is going on here. I had heard that a clogged transmission filter can cause this so I changed out the filter and noticed that the whine is a little less but it is still there. Right now I am thinking it could be the torque converter or the pump. I didn't notice the fluid being dark or with a burnt smell. There was some black sludge on the magnet. I think this is normal with a lot of milage.

Any help with this would be really appreciated!
