Default 4.7

I have owned 3 1st Gen's all with the 4.7 and they all have had the same faith. Each one when the mileage is 190-200,000 miles start to SMOKE Blue (Oil) out of the tail pipe--this usually only OCCURS @ idling, stop signs or start-up.
The 1st one I purchased a used engine w/125,000 (salvage yard verified) LOL the same issue with this engine lasted less than 1 year- Each of these engines were serviced w/oil changes ever 3,000 miles since I owned them-I have no idea previous owners .
The one that I am currently driving started with out any warning my mechanic tells me there is NO way to check were the problem is without pulling the engine apart ??

HELP
Is it bad luck or??

Thanx
Jim

Sounds like it's burning oil. That could be something as big as worn piston rings, or maybe it just needs valve stem seals. The latter will be much cheaper. When you buy a used engine, you inherit the care (or lack of) that it got. I would scope the cylinders before buying a used engine.

if it only smokes on idle and with high vacuum (pressing on the throttle, start up) its more than likely valve stem seals, they should typically be replaced around 150k anyway, good luck

I would agree with the above, personal opinion when and engine fails I just soon rebuild or at least diagnose my current engine to the full extent possible before buying an engine of unknown condition. I would also lean towards a valve stem seal failure.

Which is why I have steered clear of 4.7s, even though I have always owned dodges all of my life. I passed on many nice looking vehicles when I was looking for my Durango just because they had 4.7s. have owned this one we have for almost 9 years now, but it has the 360.

The 5.9 stem seals eventually leak too. They're rubber...they wear out. Replaced mine at over 300K because I was already in there doing the lifters. Even at this mileage the 4.7 now burns no oil between oil changes, which is every 7,500 mi.

yea i have my 5.2 torn down right now for valve stem seals I believe, it was burning oil, usually just at start up it smoked, i bought it that way and just torn into it so not sure about how much hit was using, compression is great cylinders look great but ended up turning into an all out top end build but who cares lol

The 4.7 is junk and I avoid them at all costs. There is a few people on this Forum that like them and haven't had any problems but that's it.
