Have a 2000 durango with the manual 4x4 selector. Just recently tried putting into 4 wheel drive and it is not working, actually there is no resistance at all when moving to any of the positions. Loaned it out a while ago and thought maybe they shifted it into 4 Lo or something and broke it and just didn't tell me. Looked underneath and think I found the end point of the selector cable but it looks fine - still connected. Is it common for the cable to break? Maybe it is connection at selector that had come off?

 

Get a 2nd person to do the shifting while you crawl under and see what's what.

 

Does the t-case use a cable, or a mechanical linkage?? Isn't the cable for the trans shifter??

I see, thought the cable was for the 4x4, haha. Looking underneath haven't been able to find the linkage, where would I look to find that? Thanks in advance!

 

It runs from the shift lever to the ear on the transfer case.

 

Make sure the parking brake is set good and maybe even block the wheels before you go crawling around messing with the shift levers. Don't want to bump it into neutral while you're under it and have it start rolling.

 

Finally got under to look at this and sure enough the linkage is missing. What was surprising to me was both the grommets were gone as well. Was thinking that at least one grommet would still be there. Anyway, also notice there is a leak at the transfer case. Is seals on t-case a fairly easy task for a DIYer or is it a real hassle and worth taking to a shop?

Appears to be leaking between the two halves of the transfer case.
