Default Need help 2003 durango

Hello
5.9-- 42re trans. (I think 4spd. overdrive), put in reverse takes 30 to 45 seconds to engage completely. dropped pan changed filter, oil (+4) no flush - 1qt Lucas trans. fix, no change. All other gears work fine and go right in including the overdrive. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this.? When I changed the oil, it really was not that dirty, no chunks, or band material, just the normal grey powder looking stuff on the magnet, and not a whole lot just looked like all the others that I have changed over the years. 146,000 miles on the clock.
Thanks in advance

Recheck fluid level. Check in neutral, engine/trans fully warmed up.

Did you adjust the bands while you were in there for the filter?

fluid is dead on, no band adjustment. But now it won't even go into reverse (engage). linkage is working properly, unplugged the connector all pins look good, cleaned and put dielectric grease no change. any more suggestions? guess i will have to take it to a shop witch I hate doing as I usually work on all me vehicles on my own, but I don't know crap about transmissions, i am sure it is something simple but do not know these.
Thanks again Mike

Leave the 8 pin connector unplugged, and try reverse again. (takes the electronics right out of the equation) If you still don't get reverse, that is likely going to be a mechanical problem....

Unplugged the connector still No reverse, Ok dropped the pan AGAIN changed fluid & filter AGAIN +4 fluid.no junk in pan, Adj.front band snugged, 2 1/2 out, Adj. Reverse band snugged 2 1/2 turns out. different videos show on the Rev. band to turn back out 3 turns, another shows 2 turns out so I went in the middle @ 2 1/2. checked the spring under the 5-bolt plate all good there. all forward gears are now smoother, but still no reverse. any more suggestions of what to look for?? . i am stumped.
Thanks in advance Mike

is that a rebuild? is it hard to do? I am mechanically inclined just never done a transmission before. what is a roundabout cost verses a reman. trans?

Thanks

A rebuild I should hope would fix it. Be prepared for the additional expense of broken parts though. (as I suspect that is the underlying problem.....) Several folks here on the forums have rebuilt their trans successfully, never having been in one before. There are LOTS of resources available, and several folks/companies have complete walkthru's on youtube, detailing every step.

Rebuilding it yourself will likely be cheaper than paying someone else to do it, cost there depends on which rebuild kit you get, you can find anything from bone stock, to stump-pulling monster. Check out transmissioncenter.net for some kits. The various viper kits are good for some upgrades, from mild, to wild. Paying someone else to do the whole job is like north of 2K, and that's a stock rebuild...... but, you DO get at least a one year warranty on that.....

just a stock rebuild, just a daily driver, no heavy towing, so a stock kit would work. What are the chances of (other broken parts) all other gears work fine, 1st 2nd 3rd & OD. just no reverse. never done a tranny before but have done some engine rebuilds. Any special tools needed?
