2001 Dodge Durango 4.7L V-8 engine removal question.
Hey all,
As the title suggests, I have a question regarding 2001 Dodge Durango 4.7L V-8 engine removal.
Is there a "quick and dirty" way of pulling a 4.7L engine that DOES NOT include removing the heads/timing chains before pulling the motor? In the past, working with non-overhead cammed motors, pulling the heads, using a Grade 8 bolt into the block and then pulling the motors was SOP. I've even on (eww) Fords, pulled just the intake and then used bolts and chain to the block to pull the entire assembly. On the 4.7L engines with the aluminum heads I'm pretty sure that is a no-go...but is it possible to pull the motor by running a chain around the exhaust manifolds, bolting the chain together, and then using a cherry picker to pull the motor? I intend to pull the front end off (radiator, cross member etc.) and pull the motor out straight instead of fighting it up and pulling the hood...Any advice?
Thanks in advance.
Steve

Might be a moot point as I am considering doing a rebuild on a 4.7L block that I robbed the heads off of to put on my silver '01 Durango...If I go that route, I'll probably strip the heads off the "new" durango and work them over and re-install on the rebuilt block, trying to get the most bang for the preverbal buck.
Thanks,
Steve
Yep. Two chains, either side to side, or front to back, whichever way you care to run 'em, into the exhaust manifold bolt holes. I had an engine tilt as well, so I went side to side, that way the tilt worked.
