I'm having transmission cable issues with my 2000 Durango (4.7L v-8, 45RFE transmission). The tabs where the trans cable connects to the mounting bracket on the transmission were broken by my neighbor/mechanic when he was trying to help with earlier transmission issues...The place where the cable is supposed to attach is circled in blue on the attached picture:
Taken from the service manual. Bracket circled in blue with the red arrow pointing from the cable stop to the bracket
The"fix" that was done was to use a clamp on the rear of the transmission bracket (see attached pictures) Trans cable pulled thru bracket w/o clamp Loose clamp at bracket
When this does come loose, the trans can be in any gear and the indicator will show what gear it is in but the shifter moves freely without resistance. If you put it in park, physically, you can turn the engine off and remove the keys even though it may be in 1st.
Anyone else experience this? if so what was the fix short of a new cable?
I think a new cable is about your only option. Either that, or find a better way to secure the cable down there. Run the clamp a bit tighter? Different style clamp? Maybe a small muffler style clamp? (assuming you can even find one.....) Maybe wander thru a hardware store, or the hardware isle of your local lowes/home depot/farm and fleet store. They have some odd and strange stuff.
