For starters, the 1st Gen Durango's were by far and away my personal favorites of the Dodge SUV's. As how I would rate them.....

Gas Mileage = 5 out of 10, considering its an SUV and doesnt get any better mileage then a gas powered Ram or Dakota....I think that's pretty good.

Looks = 6 out of 10, depends on the model. The R/T's were the best looking of the group, but I've seen some that have been pretty sweet regardless.

Performance = 6 out of 10, they generally are pretty reliable. While every vehicle has its problems, these were pretty good running vehicles.

As for potential problems, you definitely need to have the balljoints looked at. They were a problem in both the Dakota and the Durango. You can look it up with the VIN # on the Dodge.com site. It can tell you if it has an extended warranty, needs recall, or what not. My 01 Dakota just got an extended warranty, but my friends 2001 Durango had to be recalled.

Other then that, you might have the transmission looked at. Dodge has had problems with their transmissions in the past, but I would do it just to be safe.

Do you know how many miles/price they are asking?

Sounds pretty high to me......

I paid $15k for a fully loaded 01 Dakota Clubcab w/ the 4.7L and it only had 42k on it...... I'd be considering looking at something else...

Just my two cents: My 99' Durango with 5.9 passes everything but a gas station. I mean at 13 miles a gallon, with today's gas prices it tends to eat a hole in your wallet. Besides the gas mileage, it is all around a good vehicle.

I have a 2003 SLT+ 4x4 with a 4.7. I love it! Fun to drive and very respectable off road.
