Default Valve knock on start up

Hello, my Durango is a 2000 with 85K on it. 4.7L engine. When the engine is cold I can hear the valves or lifters knocking for about 2-3 seconds on start up. Usually after the truck sets for about 4-5 hours or so. Its pretty loud. I bought it used with 73K on it last year but I don't recall it making that noise at that time. Noise is gone almost immediately. It drives and runs fine other than that. Has anyone else had this issue ? Is there anything that I can have done for it ?
Any insight or input would be welcome.
Thanks !
Mike

It is probably your oil filter. Eather the check valve in the filter is bad or not there at all. The oil is draining out of your filter and running back into the pan. Then you start the truck and it has to pump the oil all the way up through the filter and to the top of the engine to lube the valves.

Replace the filter with one that has a check valve and might as well give it an oil change. I like Fram Tough Guard, but each to there own.

i know this is gonna sound stupid but, are u sure it's your valves an not your injectors ? injectors can be pretty loud an make you think it's the valves sometimes

correction, Dry injectors at startup are louder than normal running.

Hydrashocker, thanks for the input about the oil filter....but diesn't the filter hang straight down ? and if so, how can the oil drain into the pan after the engine is shut off ?
Thanks, mike

I've heard about that. But I have seen siphoning on oil before not to mention funky stuff that I just couldn’t explain. But I have seen this same problem on the forum before and found to be the filter.

It is only $5 bucks for the filter. Also the 4.7L has a sludge problem so change your oil at about 2500 miles. Absolutely don't go over 3000 miles on a single oil change. Right now would be a good time to get the crankcase flushed and a good full synthetic ran through if you don't already run it. It flows a lot better and might just break up a sludge problem if you have one. Also always replace your filter and never reuse one. My friend blew his up reusing a K&N oil filter.

Ok, I did change the filter. I bought one of those fancy K&N filters. I at first I thought it had solved this problem but this morning when I started up I heard the clatter again for about 2 sec. The current oil change only has ~2000 miles on it. In the next few days I will change the oil to full syth and a new filter again. I am weary of using a flush additive as I have heard good and bad about that. Any thoughts ? Also, the manual calls for 10-30w oil. I was thinking of running 5-30w for awhile to see if that helps flow on startup (?) Thanks ! Mike

When was the last time u had your timing chain checked or changed, after a period of time your chain will stretch an cause the chain to slap agains your timing chain guides, an in the end may cause your chain to break or snap a guide an cause you all kinds of ****, i had the same problem with my nissan, i snaped the chain an when it snaped it shatterd the guide which sent ton's of shivers of metal an plastic down to the oil pan which in the end ate up my engine.. if none of the other solution's hydra came up with work's just put it in the shop an let them check your timing chain/guide/gear's an see if that might be the problem.

Don't change to 5W-30. Each W of oil has different additives in it for different motor's. If you use one that is different than your motor calls for, you might just be doing more damage that good to your motor. E-mail your oil producer and ask what else you can use if you want to change over to another W of oil.
