Just to clarify..
Infinity 6012i's fit perfectly in first gen durangos with the infinity system. They even include adapters to make the four bolt speaker a three bolt. I just installed a set in the rear of my durango today and I couldn't be happier.

To illustrate what I am talking about, click on this link and look at the OEM speaker and how the ring snaps into the OEM spacer speaker bracket. Look under speaker removal and step 5. You will see the actual OEM speaker and the bracket that is part of the OEM speaker that has the three screw ears. This part of the OEM speaker must be cut off to be used to mount your aftermarket speakers and then mount into the 3 screw speaker spacer bracket.

As I plan on keeping my 6012's and possibly moving them to a future new dodge vehicle if it uses the same 6.5 inch speaker, I bought a set of custom made adaptor rings made from that website that I posted in a previous message. The set of rings only costed me like $7 bucks. I went ahead and bought two sets so I can replace all 4 of my OEM speakers. Shipping was only a few dollars for the 2 sets of rings ordered. This enabled me to snap my 6012's into the custom adaptor ring and then the custom adaptor ring snaps into the OEM speaker mounts. Only took me 10 minutes to install the speakers on each door.
Website that sells custom adaptors to fit aftermarket speakers to OEM mounting locations:

Later I found another website which sells the self install replacement surround foams which was the only thing blown on my OEM speakers. The repair kit ran like $30 a set so I got all 4 of my OEM speakers repaired. I plan to put my OEM speakers back into my Durango and save my infinity 6012's for another possible Dodge/Chrysler vehicle purchase.
Where did you buy yours? My 4 6012's I bought from Fry's did not have this metal adaptor ring that is designed for dodge vehicles? it just came with a basic plastic ring that looks more like a sleeve to pad between the speaker and the surface of the door. Possibly for the cover to snap on. You may need to post a link here so the boys can buy these 6012i's from that place so they won't have to do any retrofitting.
