I found another website that you can actually repair the speakers if only the polyeuthane surround foam is blown. I would have gone this route if I known earlier that I can repair the surround foam material. I still have my OEM infinity's sitting on my shelf in the garage, I am going to go to that website and buy the replacement foam repair kit to repair my oem infinitys in case I want to take out my nice infinitys and put them in another car!!!!

If only the polyeuthane surround foam is blown on your OEM speakers, you can repair them by buying a kit from this website. Make sure your kit comes with the coil centering alignment tool as it is a separte purchase I think. If your voice coil is not centered while you apply the replacement ring, it can mess up your speaker.

It's a good chance that you may have more than one blown OEM infinity speaker. Most obvious and common problem to these OEM speakers are the polyeurthane surround foam that is holding the cone are broken. This totally loses your deep bass response.

So you have two choices depending on your budget.

1. Repair your OEM's. I think the site that sells the foam repair kit goes for $25-$30 bucks for a pair kit but not sure if it comes with the voice coil centering tool, if it does not come with it, make sure you order that as well. You do not want to install the new ring at the same time that your voice coil is not centered. It will permanently damage your speaker because of mis-alignment.

2. Go with aftermarket Infinity's or othe brand. This will require you to do alot of custom mods to make the aftermarket speakers fit the speaker location unless you order the pre-fab mounting kit from that website to eliminate custom work and just bolt on your aftermarket market speakers as if they were oem speakers. This route will cost you the pre-fab mounting kit as well as a new set of aftermarket speakers.

Taking off the door panels are pretty easy. Just follow that link that was on my post as it shows you visual pictures step by step on how to remove the door trim. But remember, that site only stated 4 screws, but I found out there is a 5th screw located just near the side mirror adjustment **** on the driver side and same for the passenger side for the front doors.

I have ordered the kit and I repaired my OEM's pretty easily. The instructions were easy and straight forward. Now I have a my originals as a backup in case anything happens to my 6012's.

OEM has one in each of the four doors, and seperate tweeters in the front doors. Yes you will have to take the door panels off (easy with a bit of direction actually, search online for it.) The factory system is 2ohm and most afermarket speakers you will find will be 4ohm and not sound as good with the factory headunit. The OEMs simply fall apart after 5 or six years.

Your solution? Read on.

Go get two sets of the Infinity Kappa 62.7I's that are 2ohm and 6 1/2" speakers ($150 per set at Frys Electronics). These are really good speakers. These Kappas will come with the proper adapters to mount right back into the D's doors and factory holes so there is no need to buy any additional adapters or need to mess around creating your own. I kept the OEM tweeters in place so I have dual tweeters up front. The sound is a tad 'bright' so I am looking for a Sub of some sorts (really looking for a Clarion powered sub that they used to make that fits into the right rear coner of the Durango thus not taking up any floor space.)

I took my OEM speakers apart and reused the OEM plugs on the original speakers on the new Kappas so it was all plug and play. Just a little cutting (Dremel tool) and simple soldering to ensure great connections. The Kappas come with little crossovers that can be mounted via two screws in the bottom of each door. You will need to drill the holes. Total time to switch out all four doors, reuse the plugs and mount the crossovers, about 3 1/2 hours.

Happy to Help.

Onnoff7,

There seems to be inconsistencies on the ohm rating for the infinity systems on various year model Dodge vehicles. My 2000 Durango R/T uses only 4 ohms. It is printed on my OEM speaker. Before you buy your selected speaker replacement, you may need to remove the OEM speaker to see if it has a OHM rating printed on the speaker magnet. If it does not have a OHM rating printed on the speaker and you have no way to know what ohm rating your infinity system have, you may need to take it to a auto shop that specialize in audio systems to confirm what your factory infinity ohm ratings are.

The safety rule of thumb is always go with a higher ohm rating than a lesser ohm rating to prevent your audio amp from shorting out and possibly start a fire due to the amp overheating.

IndyDurango,

Let me get this straight, the amp that is on the passenger kick panel is just a preamp and not the actual amp then? The actual amp will belocated at the rear passenger corner panel? Is this the rear middle seating or the rear 3rd seating? I like to know so I can inspect the actual location for possible amp replacement with a little more powerful amp that will still fit in the original location of the OEM amp. I want to keep everything inside looking stock. I do not want to show off anything that is a prelude to thieves breaking into my car.

Just to clarify..

Infinity 6012i's fit perfectly in first gen durangos with the infinity system. They even include adapters to make the four bolt speaker a three bolt. I just installed a set in the rear of my durango today and I couldn't be happier.

As far as I know, it is the only amp and it located behind the passengers kick panel.
