transmission flush and filter change
01 durango 4.7 should i have the trans fluid flushed and filters changed or just the fluid in the pan and filters changed. i have heard different opinions on what would be best. The trans fluid does smell like is fried any suggetions...
Do a filter-fluid change. Remember to clean the magnet in the bottom of the pan. A lot of the fluid will come out when you do the change. Approx. 6-7 quarts.
If you are that worried about it, then after you drive it for about 500 miles replace it again. You can always do another filter change but I don't think you will need it. The filter should be just fine.
If it were my truck, I would replace both the filter and fluid twice just to be sure.

Thanks hydra so if i understand u just drop the pan change the filters and replace whatever fluid comes out.Is there a reason why i should not have it flushed is it just a waste of money or some other reason?
In my opinion.... you never know what those flushing detergents really do. Some could cause more damage than good. There are some out there that people swear by but I'm always a sceptic. I would just do a change and see what the fluid looks like after 500 miles. You can check the fluid color right on the dipstick. I think you could even have it analyzed if you wanted to.
Adjusting the reverse band is a "MUST DO" while your in there. I did mine for the first time at 126000 miles. It made a world of difference. I also did the forward bands but you can do that without removing the pan. You'll need an inch pound torque wrench for the adjustment. I actually bought one for $30 from harbor freight.

They don't clean the filter. They tell you that it will but you tell me how? The only way to clean the filter is to replace it.
