Default Transmisson to transfer case leak

I just replaced both seals between the transmission and transfer case and I'm just about ready to reinstall the t-case. My question is, the Haynes manual says to run a bead of RTV sealant to the mating surface on the tranny but there was no gasket or sealant there when I disassembled it. There's a small channel that I think acts as a weep hole to alert the vehicale owner to a leakage problem, so wouldn't using a silicone sealant defeat that purpose?

Sounds like it. When the shop did mine they sealed it with RTV.

Anyone, I'm considering doing this in my driveway but need to know the approximate time it will take and will it make a complete mess?

I dont know how much fluid is in the t-case, however Ive changed the tranny fluid a couple times and there isnt much spillage, only what runs down the tools, and your arms when taking out the bolts. I guarantee you there is more fluid in the tranny than the t-case. I'm pretty sure the the same kind of catch pan you would use if you changed your oil would do just fine.
