The pump would cause this though. The blades inside are not in the right alignment if there is any play in the pulley. I imagine the bearings are shot. That's just what happens...

I agree. You don't want to have any play in the water pump. Especially not where the fan connects, that would be a sure fan meets and goes through hood syndrome.[sm=oopssign.gif]
