Default transmission will not go above 2nd

Our 98 dodge durango will not go above 2nd gear. It just revs at high rpms. any ideas as to what could be the problem? Thanks- Megan

Is the shifter in the correct position? On my parents 98' the shift lever is just a little bit off so if the bar is in the D slot it is actually only in 2nd.
Also check the fluid to make sure it is at the proper level.

If it cycles between having first gear and no first gear whenever it feels like it, it is probably one or more of the speed sensors. There are three. One on the outside of the tranny, one in the pan and one on the rear differential. All are about $100 each. Good Luck!

Do you have a check engine light on? Same problem happened to me. Suddenly my Durango will not shift beyond 2nd gear unless I full throttle it to try to force it to upshift. Check engine light just happen to come on when this issue surfaced. Took it the dealer while it was still under warranty and found out the Governor Actuator switches went out.
