Default Heater Core Access Door Fabrication

Now we know that the heater core is a pain[:@]so with that in mind I might try something new. I am wondering if an access door can be cut in the firewall so the heater core can be accessed. Has anyone looked inside the core housing to see what kind wall is on the motor side of the firewall? I am wondering if we can cut an access door long wise into the firewall so that a person can remove the core and place a sealed door over the engine side firewall.

Shall I try?[sm=feedback.gif]

That would be great if it could be done. It sounds like a job in itself but it would definitely be a lot less work than removing the dash...

That is the point. So, anyone seen inside the core housing?

I just replaced my heater core a week ago and it was a pain in the a**. and it looks like I'll be taking the dash out again cause I never changed my evap coil, and now I think it's leaking. I should have taken some pics with the dash out of her. but I dont see why you couldn't put a lil door in there to remove the heater core. I think thats a good idea.

We did that very thing on my '73 Mach1 Mustang. The hole was covered up with a license plate and you couldn't see it unless you stuck your head up under the glove box.

IF you do it, how do you know where to cut and how deep? PLEASE take lots of pictures to post for the rest of us. I'm in if needed. I'd hate to pull that dash once much less twice!
